Fifty years ago, 6,800 Americans and 22,000 Japanese died in one of the bloodiest battles of World War II. Now old enemies meet as friends to remember.

On March 14, 1,000 Americans will join 200 Japanese survivors and their families for memorial services on Iwo Jima marking the beginning of the end of World War II. "This is not a victory celebration," says one Marine helping to prepare for the ceremony. "This is a memorial service to honor the veterans. It is because of them that we've enjoyed 50 years of peace."
