BARRE - The Gaston Pond dam beneath Mill Road may be an "orphan," according to a spokesman for the state Department of Conservation and Recreation, and that could mean repair of the failing dam could be relegated to the back burner.
Richard Wheeler, superintendent of the town's Department of Public Works, isn't concerned about the dam because DPW crews recently cleaned out a culvert beneath Mill Road that was blocked by beaver debris.
Cleaning out the culvert enabled him to sufficiently draw down the level of Gaston Pond. A torrential downpour from a thunderstorm or even a tropical storm now will not raise the water to ...
