Eighty-two of the 195 high schools identified for the provincial Education Department's recovery plan commenced classes this weekend despite the unions' calls to boycott the government's "failing" recovery plan, said Education MEC Cameron Dugmore.
Teacher unions and the department have been at loggerheads about the nationally declared stipend teachers will be paid for extra hours to help pupils catch up on work missed during the public sector strike in June.
A total of 455 schools in the Western Cape have been identified for the recovery plan, 195 of which are high schools.
