Defense companies vying for contracts for the next phase of the Joint Advanced Strike Technology (JAST) aircraft program are solidifying their proposals for what the Marine Corps' version of the aircraft will look like, according to the senior program official.

The Marine Corps is looking for JAST, configured with Advanced Short-Take Off and Landing (ASTOVL) technology, to replace its fleet of AV-8B Harrier aircraft. The challenge is that the ASTOVL aircraft not be too different from the Navy and Air Force aircraft produced out of JAST. Those designs are expected to be for conventional take-off and landing combat aircraft.
