MAUI, HAWAII -- Selecting an acne patient's long-term maintenance regimen is at least as important a decision as the initial treatment phase, Dr. Hilary E. Baldwin said at the annual Hawaii Dermatology seminar sponsored by Skin Disease Education Foundation.
"Acne is a chronic, relapsing condition for which there are only two cures: time and isotretinoin. And lots of our patients can't take isotretinoin for one reason or another; for them, maintenance therapy is going to be necessary. Without maintenance therapy, we guarantee failure for our patients," asserted Dr. Baldwin, vice chair of dermatology at State University of New York, Brooklyn.
