In 1991 the Ann Arbor, Michigan, Public Schools received a grant to develop alternative classroom-based assessment in elementary mathematics. The purposes of the project were to help teachers expand their use of alternative-assessment techniques and to develop assessment activities and lessons that model various strategies. This book is the product of that project, whose intent is to model alternative assessment as a natural extension of classroom activities and lessons.
