In professional team sport the replacement of leaders (coaches and managers) is a regular and frequent occurrence. Recently, Dodd (1992) reported data on the tenure and frequency of turnover of coaches and managers in professional sport in North America. During the five year period 1977-1982 only 20.6 per cent of the coaches/managers held the same position for a five year period and the average tenure for these individuals was 2.48 years. For the period 1987-1992 only 15.3 percent of the coaches/managers held the same positions for five years and the average tenure was 2.44 years.
