Much attention has been paid to the growing shortage of public health workers, with numerous efforts under way to attract new workers to the field and retain those already in the trenches. Now, a new Institute of Medicine report is shining a light on a shortage within the shortage: the critical lack of public health physicians.
Created at the request of Congress, "Training Physicians for Public Health Careers" puts forth not only recommendations on how to shore up public health physician numbers, but outlines the authors' vision for a robust public health physician work force.
