The overall infant mortality rate in the United States did not change significantly between 2003 and 2004, and black women had the highest overall infant mortality rate.
According to federal data released in May, the U.S. infant mortality rate was 6.78 infant deaths per 1,000 live births in 2004, compared to 6.84 deaths per 1,000 live births in 2003. Black women had an infant mortality rate of 13.6 per 1,000 live births compared to a rate of 5.66 per 1,000 births among white women and a rate of 4.55 per 1,000 live births for women of Cuban ethnicity.
