OTTAWA -- The Canadian government will introduce a bill this week to ban the controversial gasoline additive MMT as part of its revamped environmental mandate.
Besides banning MMT, or methylcyclopentadienyl manganese tricarbonyl, Environmental Minister Sheila Copps also said she hopes to convert the entire government fleet of 39,000 vehicles to burn alternative fuels like ethanol or natural gas by the end of the decade.
The new environmental initiative comes on the heels of an admission by the Canadian government that it is about 15% short of meeting its goal of capping greenhouse emissions at 1990 levels by 2000.
