OTTAWA -- U.S. natural gas giant Enron Corp. plans to spend US$400 million to expand its Northern Border Pipeline in anticipation of a growing demand for Canadian natural gas in the United States.

Enron President Richard Kinder told a Calgary gas conference that it will boost capacity on its pipeline between the Canadian border and Iowa to 2 Bcfd from 1.6 Bcfd as well as expand the line 180 miles into the Chicago market.

U.S. gas demand is expected to increase to 27 Tcf per year from 20 Tcf by the end of the decade, largely because of a growing electrical cogeneration market being fueled by gas, he said.
