The author reports here on the treatment of hiccoughs with one main point, Suliao DU-25. Hegu L.I.-4 was added in cases of poor appetite, constipation, epigastric distension and pain. The duration of illness was from 15 minutes to 10 days, the age ranged from 14 to 72 years, and the aetiology was largely unknown (although six cases were due to food poisoning and two to abdominal surgery). From a TCM viewpoint hiccoughs are mostly induced by unrestrained eating and drinking, emotional disorders, or weakness due to chronic disease, all of which disturb the descending function of the Stomach and cause convulsions of the diaphragm.
