NEW YORK -- Paper towels may be less expensive and more disposable than the cloth variety, but manufacturers are positioning them as more than just cheap alternatives.

Category leader Procter & Gamble Co. (P&G) promotes its Bounty paper towels as soft and durable and tells consumers they can rinse, wring out and reuse a single sheet to complete tough cleaning chores.

The company's recently completed "One Sheet Challenge" contest, in fact, offered a $30,000 kitchen makeover to the consumer who submitted the best story about using a single Bounty paper towel to tackle a tough cleaning job.
