Background
The Piper genus includes the most valuable economically important spice crop, black pepper (
Piper nigrum
L) the 'King of Spices' which is consumed throughout the world. Apart from Asian countries such as Malaysia, India, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, China and SriLanka, it is also cultivated in Brazil and Madagascar. The humid climatic conditions and the daily consumption in the diet made this spice crop a synonym of the Asian continent. The Western Ghats of Indian peninsula is the primary centre of origin of the 'King of spices' (
