A NEW STUDY has hinted that older men and women who suffer from cataracts or age-related macular degeneration (AMD) face an increased risk of early death compared to older people without these conditions.
However, researchers at Australia's University of Sydney are unsure of whether the vision loss occurs as a result of the ageing process or if the conditions of the disease increase an individual's mortality rate. Although there are a number of studies that have showed successful links between visual impairment and heightened mortality rates, the Australian-based study has discovered mixed results directly concerning cataracts or AMD and death.
