This is the first of a three-part series investigating the science behind lutein and zeaxanthin in relation to the retina. This first article will provide background information about carotenoids, explain how their structure relates to function within the retina, and describe specifically how lutein and zeaxanthin may be beneficial in the prevention of onset or progression of age-related macular disease. The second article will investigate the specific role of lutein and zeaxanthin in relation to the blue-light hazard. The third article will look at the potential effects of lutein and zeaxanthin on normal visual function, and also describe other potential health benefits ...
