Aug. 14--California Newspapers Partnership has named Jeff Kiel as the publisher of the Mercury News, succeeding George Riggs, who continues as CNP president.
Kiel, 48, joined the Mercury News in February 2002 as vice president of advertising. Before that, he was chief financial officer at the Miami Herald and a member of Knight Ridder's corporate staff.
Riggs has served as both CNP president and Mercury News publisher for the past year, and is stepping down from the publisher's job to concentrate on his duties as CNP president.
