Aug. 14--FORT MONTGOMERY -- The special inspections that Gov. Eliot Spitzer ordered of the state's 50 deck-truss spans after a bridge of the same design collapsed in Minneapolis came to Orange County yesterday.
Engineers from the state Department of Transportation and Wilbur Smith Associates of Columbia, S.C., began a three-day inspection of the 70-year-old bridge that carries Route 9W over Popolopen Creek on twin-deck trusses that rise 123 feet above the cavernous gorge near the Bear Mountain traffic circle.
