An invasive river alga with an ugly habit and a fitting common name - "rock snot" - could be on its way to Massachusetts after being found in recent weeks in the Connecticut River, which flows south along the border of Vermont and New Hampshire into Western Massachusetts and Central Connecticut.
Known scientifically as didymosphenia geminata or "didymo," the alga also was found in Vermont's White River and the New York section of the Batten Kill, which also flows into Vermont.
