Aug. 16--LOWELL -- On Saturday, the north banks of the Merrimack River will be flooded with the smells of sweet star anise, refreshing Thai basil and savory fish sauce. The sounds will come in waves of traditional Southeast Asian music, followed by the modern pop rhythms of young Khmer rappers. At the same time, the deep rumble of the beating drums from the Cambodian dragon boats will float down the river, competing with the rushing waters of the Hunts Falls downstream.
These are the sights, sounds and smells of the Lowell Southeast Asian Water Festival. Now in its 11th year, the fest takes place the third Saturday in August ...
