Aug. 17--I was in New York on Wednesday, and the buzz about Phil Rizzuto's death was nearly as loud and omnipresent as the taxi horns.

It's funny how emotionally invested people become in baseball player/broadcasters such as Rizzuto and Richie Ashburn, whose funeral almost exactly a decade ago drew long lines of tearful mourners to Memorial Hall.

Their appeal was the way they connected with their audiences. It certainly wasn't their technical skills. They didn't ingest statistics. Their voices were grating, not great.
