"Target 2000--A World Without Polio" is the theme for the annual World Health Day on April 7, 1995 (1). In 1988, the World Health Organization (WHO) established as an objective the global eradication of poliomyelitis by the year 2000 (2). Progress toward this goal has included the elimination of endemic polio from the Western Hemisphere and the global reduction in reported polio by more than 70% since 1988--achievements that also have underscored the feasibility of eradicating this disease.
