Aug. 19--The origin of some 90 stainless steel tanker trucks that daily deliver 580,000 gallons of milk to Golden Cheese Co. of California holds the key to why the cheese factory, the largest of its kind when it opened more than two decades ago , will close at year's end. The cheese plant near Highway 91 in Corona, has lost its local milk supply.
The Chino Basin, known just a decade ago for its dense concentration of dairies, has become blanketed with housing, retail and warehouse development. Many of the region's dairy farmers have relocated to California's Central Valley, Idaho, New Mexico and Texas.
