Restless legs syndrome (RLS) and periodic limb movement disorder (PLMD) are primary sleep disorders that have gained considerable notoriety. Although less well-recognized than obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS)--another primary sleep disorder--RLS and PLMD can cause significant morbidity and impair quality of life. In general, primary sleep disorders may delay sleep onset, cause multiple arousals and awakenings, and promote excessive daytime sleepiness (see Table 1).
