Chronic insomnia is a major public health problem affecting millions of individuals, along with their families and communities. Little is known about the mechanisms, causes, clinical course, comorbidities, and consequences of chronic insomnia. (1)
So begins the conclusion of the consensus of the June 2005 National Institutes of Health (NIH) Sleep Panel--and the NIH is not alone in being puzzled by insomnia. Review the available sleep literature and you will frequently encounter the "lack of understanding clause."
