Byline: Brook Stockberger

Aug. 20--LAS CRUCES -- Southern New Mexico has been on a hot streak the past several years. New houses and businesses have gone up all around Las Cruces and the population continued to grow.

Recently, though, the news from the rest of the nation has been of a slowdown in construction. The Commerce Department reported last week that construction of new homes and apartments dropped by 6.1 percent in July from the June pace to an annual rate of 1.38 million units.

So, has construction fallen off in Las Cruces?

According to the building permit reports from the city, construction is off the pace of 2006.
