ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - St. Louis pitching coach Dave Duncan said there was a very simple reason why Joel Pineiro struggled with the Red Sox. Duncan said he determined during the right-hander's first start with the National League team 2 1/2 weeks ago that he was inadvertently tipping off his pitches to batters.
"You don't have the kind of stuff like he has and get hit like he did," Duncan told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "You start looking for why it was so obvious."
In three starts since the flaw was presumably discovered, Pineiro is 3-0 with a 2.37 ERA, while walking no batters and striking out 11 in 19 innings. The 26-year-old, who was ...
