In an unprecedented move, rising Springbok and Blue Bulls rugby superstar Pierre Spies has taken it upon himself to undergo a further set of tests - at his own expense - in a bid to kickstart his stalled career.
His World Cup dreams were dashed last week when Springbok coach Jake White excluded him from the 30-man squad after a third medical opinion confirmed an initial diagnosis that Spies had indeed suffered a pulmonary embolism (blood clots in the lungs).
Now Spies has embarked on a fourth series of blood tests which could clear him to play rugby as early as next week.
