Aug. 23--It doesn't get the attention of the brassy saxophone or the rockin' electric guitar, but the humble jug holds an important place in the history of American popular music, and Bay Area music in particular.
Jerry Garcia and Bob Weir of the Grateful Dead, bluegrass innovator David Grisman, and blues chanteuse Maria Muldaur are just a few of the artists to pass through jug bands on the way to finding their own distinctive and commercially viable voices.
That legacy will be celebrated this weekend at the annual San Francisco Jug Band Festival.
