Aug. 23--DETROIT -- The spacious outfield in Comerica Park invites an outfielder to run. Franklin Gutierrez covers more ground than most, and he showed off his speed and instincts last night by chasing down a line drive in the right-center field gap. It is why he was in the Cleveland Indians' lineup.
Even more impressive -- and certainly more important for the Indians -- Gutierrez made a mark hitting into the deep outfield, as well as running in it. Despite dimensions that discourage power, he smacked a double and a three-run homer that sparked the Tribe to a much-needed 11-8 win over the host Tigers.
