GAIM is, without a doubt, one of the most flexible and powerful instant messaging programs for any platform--remembering it's available for both Linux and Windows. For some time now, however, there's been a bit of murky ground over its name. GAIM started as a Linux client for the AOL instant messaging system, hence the name (GTK+ AOL Instant Messenger). It quickly grew to support a wide range of protocols, but retained the name. AOL eventually trademarked AIM (AOL Instant Messenger) and, as a result, pressured the developers of GAIM to give up the name. After a lengthy struggle they did just that in April this year--and Pidgin was born.
