MELBOURNE, Australia, Aug. 24, 2007 (IPS/GIN) -- The Australian government's agreement to provide uranium to India is based more on calculations of economic gain than on a U.S.-style attempt to contain China, according to leading Australian academics.

"The Howard Government is trying to maximize its economic leverage throughout the region, to use Australia's abundant uranium to increase its economic profile," said James Leibold, a lecturer in Politics and Asian Studies at La Trobe University.
