WASHINGTON, Aug. 23, 2007 (IPS/GIN) -- The level of violence in Iraq remains "high," with only modest improvements possible over the next six to 12 months, according to a study by the U.S. intelligence community released Thursday.
The report acknowledged that there have been some improvements in Iraq's security situation during the past seven months. At the same time, however, prospects for a political settlement to Iraq's multiple internal conflicts -- particularly between the Shia majority and the Sunni minority -- appear bleak.
