Aug. 25--SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- He walked through the door at about 11:40 a.m. on Friday, wearing the standard-issue white collared shirt, blue shorts and an easygoing grin. The only thing setting Jimmy Clausen apart was the sheet of paper in his hand, the one with red markings around a prepared statement.
Trumpet-playing cherubs did not herald his arrival. Nor did War, Famine and Pestilence follow him into the auditorium. For the fraction of people with an opinion of Jimmy Clausen that lies somewhere in between, he was merely what you might expect:
