VIENNA -- Genetically determined loss of epidermal barrier function has emerged as a major predisposing factor for atopic dermatitis, Dr. Alan D. Irvine reported at the 16th Congress of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology.
It has long been apparent that genetic factors play an important role in atopic dermatitis, with familial occurrence being common. A concordance rate of approximately 80% has been found to exist among monozygotic twins, according to the study investigators.
