From midyear 2005 to midyear 2006 (June 30, 2006), inmates in state prisons increased 3 percent; in federal prisons, 3.2 percent; and in local Jails, 2,5 percent, as reported in the Bureau of Justice Statistics bulletin Prison and Jail Inmates at Midyear 2006. At midyear 2006, 750 people per 100,000 residents (one in every 133) U.S. residents were in prison or jail. The number of prisoners under state and federal jurisdiction increased by 2.8 percent, the largest increase since 2000.
