Article: EDITORIAL: Signify fresh start with name for San Jose's Vietnamese business district.(Editorial)

Aug. 27--We won't demand a say in naming the new business district. But we'll make a suggestion:

Saigon, Vietnam -- it doesn't matter. Just don't call it "Little." Make it "New."

The diminutive, overused "Little" implies a lesser version of something. "New" says we've grown beyond.

Settlers from other cultures recognized this. They talked of the New World. They named New York City, New England, New Mexico. "New" places develop their own powerful identity. Would Little Mexico or Little York be the same?

New Saigon would still evoke the beloved historic capital without seeming stuck in the past. ...
