In 1908, at the age of 18, W. H. "Homer" Mills founded Mills Repair Shop in Shawnee, Okla., with most of the business at that time coming from the bicycle market. The mechanically inclined Homer soon gained a reputation for being able to repair almost anything. His brother, Frank, eventually joined the business, then after a few years, sold his share to Les Thompson. In 1924, Homer bought out Thompson, and changed the name of the company to Mills Machine Co.
Around the same time, the oil boom hit Oklahoma. Oklahoma Seismograph Co. moved into Shawnee, and decided that Mills Machine had the technical skills to repair drilling rigs and bits. Mills Machine began to ...
