Article: 'Lock 'em up!'(poll indicates fear of crime is top U.S. concern)

WASHINGTON, D.C--"We're fed up--and angry. We want something done. We want the criminals off our streets. Most of all, we want the fear to go away. We want to feel safe once again."

That is the message that recent polls show the American people want to give to public officials. Crime--not health care, nor AIDS, nor drugs, nor war--is now the number one concern of most Americans. A USA TODAY/CNN/Gallup poll taken just last month shows that crime is now the nation's top concern. The poll showed fear of crime at the highest level--37 percent saying it's their top worry--since Gallup began asking the question in the 1930s.
