VALUABLE bluefin tuna, much sought after for their tasty flesh, arebeing hunted to virtual extinction in Irish waters.
And calls for the Government to create a 200-mile conservation zone around ourcoastline are being blocked by EU agreements.
The endangered fish can sell for up to E120,000 each in Tokyo markets, wherethey are prized as a sushi delicacy.
Bord Iascaigh Mhara has even called the fish 'floating goldmines'.
Irish fishermen do not have a quota for bluefin tuna, so they should be safehere despite facing extinction in other parts of the world.
As recently as 2004 they were seen in abundance in Irish waters, but ...
