Aug. 28--In the nation, Nebraska and the Omaha metro area, poverty rates are falling for black residents while at the same time rising for whites.

Both nationally and in Omaha, black poverty rates remain far above those for whites. In the Omaha metro area, almost one in three black Omahans live in poverty. For whites, it's fewer than one in 10.

But the latest economic snapshot for the nation released today by the U.S. Census Bureau indicated the gap shrank during 2006.

The Census Bureau reported today that 36.5 million Americans, or 12.3 percent, were living in poverty during 2006. That's down from 12.6 percent ...
