Aug. 29--FOXBOROUGH, Mass -- . -- Speaking publicly for the first time since his late arrival at training camp, Patriots cornerback Asante Samuel did not express regrets or hard feelings over his contract dispute. He said his 31-day absence was a business decision, and that he was doing what he had to do.
The sides resolved the situation Tuesday as Samuel, designated the team's franchise player in February, signed a one-year contract worth $7.79 million. He would not say whether the deal included a guarantee the franchise tag would not be placed on him again next year, although he seemed to indicate the team made no such promise.
