Katie Couric's trip to Iraq is a little bit about understanding a bloody mess in the desert and a lot about a showcase photo op for celebrity journalism.
That's not how CBS News is positioning it, of course.
The 12-day trip on which she embarked Wednesday night, CBS promises, will provide rich rewards for the frustrated viewer.
She will anchor the ratings-challenged "CBS Evening News" Tuesday and Wednesday from Baghdad and then two nights from Damascus. She will also file "eight to 10" field reports, said CBS News Executive Producer Rick Kaplan.
