Aug. 30--Monica Yates, the Botetourt County woman who pleaded guilty in March to federal fraud charges and earlier to state charges that she mistreated dozens of dogs and cats, was sentenced Wednesday to 97 months in federal prison.
Yates, of Daleville, also was ordered to repay $1.5 million, mostly to CUNA Mutual Life Insurance Co. and Merrill Lynch, Pierce, Fenner & Smith, companies where she had worked as an investment adviser and had persuaded clients to transfer their money to her.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Pat Hogeboom said the companies have repaid the clients' losses, which were incurred between 2004 and 2006.
