* There are more than 14,000 golf courses in the United States, and a new one opens every day. Altogether they cover more than 2000 square miles (5200 [km.sup.2]) - an area as large as the state of Delaware! * Golf courses often are built on land that was good wildlife habitat. This means it was home to many species (kinds) of wildlife. After a coure is built, fewer species can find food and shelter there. * To keep a golf course green and insect-free, it may be sprayed with more than one ton of pesticides and other chemicals each year.
