Aug. 31--The longtime director of the Toledo-Lucas County Public Library has turned down the top job at the Salt Lake City Public Library, for which he was the only finalist.

Clyde Scoles, 58, who has been director of the library system here for 22 years, said yesterday that the position in Utah wasn't a good fit.

Mr. Scoles spent almost a week in Salt Lake interviewing for the job.

"I'm going to stay," Mr. Scoles said yesterday. "It's a very good library system out there. It's not as large as ours, but extremely passionate and very diverse.
