Veteran soul-gospel vocalist Cissy Houston was among the performers who recently were named recipients of the Rhythm & Blues Foundation's annual Pioneer Awards.
Ms. Houston was one of music's most sought after background singers, She backed up her legendary niece Dionne Warwick, Aretha Franklin and Elvis Presley among others. She also had her own group, the Sweet Inspirations who won fame with the hit Sweet Inspiration in the '60s.
