Sep. 3--NORTON -- The Akron Machining Institute churned out thousands of machinists during the past three decades. But all that came to an abrupt halt earlier this summer.
The school closed on July 31, putting 15 employees out of work and 29 students on the streets.
"It makes me sick," said Dave Sattler, president of the Akron chapter of the National Tooling and Machining Association (NTMA), which owned the school.
"We couldn't get enough students to maintain it."
While some high schools and technical colleges offer similar programs, the Akron Machining Institute was a rare breed one of only three ...
