Sep. 4--Amelia Powers perches on the edge of a chair in her home gym. Medals and trophies crowd the shelf behind her. An image of the Virgin Mary is propped up behind her most recent award -- the Ms. Fitness America trophy she won in mid-August.
Powers, a 35-year-old Peruvian mother who lives in Menands, has been entering fitness contests since she was 16. She was Miss Peru Fitness nine times. Today, nearly 20 years since she started competing, and after having her first child, 4-year-old Brandon, she has the kind of body people admire. Men stare and call her husband a "lucky man."
