Sep. 4--Roanoke schools ended the last fiscal year with an unusually large budget surplus, a windfall that school officials plan to spend on textbooks, roof replacements and furniture.
The school system closed its budget year, which ended June 30, with a surplus of $3.6 million, according to Jesse Hall, the city's finance director. That unspent money "is sprinkled throughout their budget funds," he said. "It was in the instructional area."
